The modern city confronts us with a dense sound environment through which we navigate mostly unconsciously. Much more than the visual sphere sounds hold the ability to cross physical borders between the private and public; they can easily invade private spaces or pour out of them. At the same time, specific sounds in public space can create both enjoyable and rather disturbing acoustic situations.
Soundpockets is a series of projects of intimate sound interventions in public spaces. By using fm radiowaves, soundbeams and miniature speakers to create local pockets of sound, the different projects have a different scope and focus: creating private listening rooms, changing soundtracks of a location, displacement of time/or space and a bit of general disruption of everyday life.
For Urban Interface Oslo Gilje will present Soundpockets part 1, a directional sound beam which explores and projects sounds into a space, and part 2, a soundtrack radio station for specific locations in Oslo.
Adding these supplementary layers of sounds to an already complex surrounding will break with the everyday perceptions of these spaces and highlight their fictional potential. Passer-bys will experience the instability and porosity of both public space and of what they probably understand as their own private sphere.
